Double Ins is a trips-based pass concept out of Y Off Trips Pats in Shotgun that isolates two inside breaking routes designed to attack the middle of the field against both man and zone coverage. The trips side runs a stack of in-breaking routes that cross the field horizontally, creating natural picks against man coverage while settling into soft spots between zone defenders. The backside receiver runs a complementary route to hold the single-side corner honest, and the primary read starts with the shallow in route working to the deep in route if the underneath defender sinks too far.
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals zone coverage and opens throwing lanes to the deep in route over the top. Key the slot cornerback's leverage: if he presses inside on the trips stack, that signals man coverage and you should expect natural picks to spring one of the in routes free. Look for user-controlled safeties sitting in the middle of the field trying to jump the in routes, which is the biggest threat to this concept and requires a quick answer to the backside route. Cover 2 shells with hard-flowing linebackers can undercut both in routes if the quarterback holds the ball too long, so timing the throw before the linebackers reach their zone drop is critical. Blitz-heavy defenses that send extra rushers off the edge will struggle to disrupt this play since the in routes get the ball out quickly, but a delayed A-gap blitz can collapse the pocket before the deep in route develops.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell, since Double Ins thrives against zone coverages like Cover 3 and Cover 4 where the ins settle into the seams between linebackers and safeties. Against man coverage, hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant to give yourself a fast throwing option if the trips side gets clogged by traffic. This play works best on second and medium to third and medium situations where the sticks align with the depth of the in routes. Pair Double Ins with Wheel Mesh or Pats Cross from the same set to keep defenders guessing between crossing traffic and inside breaking routes, forcing linebackers to widen their drops. If the user drops a defender into the deep in route lane, check down to the shallow in route immediately since holding the ball invites pressure up the middle.
