Scat

Shotgun·Y Off Trips Pats·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Scat out of Y Off Trips Pats is a quick-hitting pass concept built to attack man coverage with a scat back release and trips-side spacing routes designed to create instant separation underneath. The trips receivers work a combination of a shallow drag, a quick out, and a seam or corner route to stretch the field horizontally while the running back releases into the flat as a checkdown or man beater against linebackers. The primary read starts with the trips side shallow drag or out breaking against soft coverage, then progresses to the seam/corner if the corner or safety jumps the underneath routes, and finally to the scat back release as the built in checkdown against blitz pressure.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with a single high safety is the ideal shell for Scat since the trips drag and out routes create natural rubs and separation that man defenders struggle to trail through. Watch the flat defender and underneath linebackers post snap, if they sink hard into the drag or out route immediately look to the seam or corner route for the bigger gain. Cover 3 zone with a sky safety can shut this down if the corner sits on the flat route and the hook defender walls off the drag, forcing you to check it down to the scat back quickly. Identify blitz packages pre snap by checking linebacker depth and slot corner alignment, a walked up nickel or Mike linebacker signals pressure and means the scat back release becomes your primary outlet. Cover 2 with aggressive corners jumping underneath routes is a red flag, if you see corners sitting at five yards depth pre snap, expect them to undercut the out or drag and be ready to layer the corner route behind them.

Usage Tips

Use Scat on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage since the drag and out combination creates immediate separation against man defenders trailing from trips.

Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see two high safeties bail into a deep half shell, prioritize the seam or corner route since the underneath drag will be sat on by linebackers in shorter zone drops.

Hot route the scat back to a flat route or check release into a block if you diagnose a blitz look, this gives you a quick outlet against nano blitzes and five to six man pressure packages.

Pair Scat with Pats Cross or PA Pats Cross in your play calling sequence, running the same trips look with different releases keeps defenders honest and makes them hesitate on jumping the drag route.

Against zone heavy defenses, work Scat early in a series to set up Mesh Y Out or Wheel Mesh later since the picture looks similar pre snap but attacks different levels of the defense.
