X Curl out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Pats is a trips-based zone beater built around the X receiver settling into a curl route at the boundary while the trips side works underneath and vertical stems to hold linebackers and safeties. The concept isolates the X against a single defender on the backside, giving you a high-percentage sit route versus zone drops or a hard breaking stick move versus man coverage. Primary read starts with the X curl, then progresses to the trips side mesh or in-cut if the boundary corner sinks with the sit route.
Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high often means the flat defender to the X side has help over the top which can bait a throw into a lurking linebacker Watch the boundary corner depth at the snap, if he sinks into a hard curl-flat zone drop the window closes fast and you need to reset to the trips concept Key the weak side linebacker or nickel defender for a delayed blitz off the edge since trips sets can trigger a simulated pressure look Man coverage with a single high safety is where this play hits hardest because the X curl breaks away from trail technique Watch for a sky or cloud rotation to the trips side, if the defense rotates two defenders there it signals extra attention on the boundary and the X curl becomes the primary answer against a lighter shell
Check the pre-snap alignment of the backside corner, if he is playing off with outside leverage the X curl will sit down in the soft spot for an easy pitch and catch
Use this on second and medium or third and short where the sit route distance matches the sticks
Hot route the X into a quick out if you see press man on the backside to avoid a jam disrupting the timing
Pair this with Jets Curl or Deep Slot Curl in the same set to build a curl flood package that forces zone defenders to declare early
Motion check the trips side pre-snap to identify man versus zone, if the defense shifts to match motion you are in man and should look to the trips side breakers instead of the X
