Inside Zone from Shotgun Y Off Trips Pats is a downhill zone run play that asks the offensive line to step in unison and create a natural cutback lane based on defensive flow. This is a pure run play, not an RPO or play-action look, so the trips receiver bunch to one side serves mainly to influence the defense with potential run support or bubble motion rather than a route concept. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is playside gap first, then bend it back through the cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged, keying the flow of the linebackers and the down blocks from the guards and center.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight behind the defensive line expect quick downhill fills that clog the interior gaps. Identify whether the defense is in a 4-3 or 3-4 front, odd fronts with a nose tackle over center make inside zone tougher to execute cleanly. Look for safety rotation into the box, an eighth defender near the line signals a run blitz or run commit look that this play struggles against. Post-snap, key the mike linebacker's first step, if he flows hard playside without hesitation the cutback lane opens for a big gain. This play gets shut down by disciplined gap defense and quick-flowing linebackers who stay square and do not bite on zone flow, so avoid calling it repeatedly against defenses that show consistent gap discipline.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box. Use the trips side pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing hard one direction, then let the running back read the cutback lane if the defense overcommits. Pair this with Pats HB Screen and HB Power out of the same Y Off Trips Pats set so defenses cannot sit on one run tendency. On early downs like first and ten, this play punishes defenses stacked in nickel or dime looks that lack gap integrity. If you see a linebacker cheating downhill pre-snap, consider hot routing the fullback or extra blocker to seal the alley defender for a bigger cutback gain. Manually control the running back after the handoff so you can press the hole and cut off the guard's block instead of trusting the CPU logic.
