Breakdown

Mesh Y Out is a man beater built out of the Shotgun Y Off Trips Pats set that combines a classic mesh crossing concept with an out route from the Y to give the quarterback a natural rub against man coverage. The two underneath crossers create traffic to shake defenders on the mesh point while the Y works to the flat on the out, giving a high low read against man and a way to attack the sideline against zone drops. Primary progression starts with the mesh crossers working low to high across the field, then works to the Y out as a checkdown or hot read if the mesh is blanketed or a blitz forces a quick decision.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since two deep safeties usually signal zone drops that will squeeze the mesh crossers, while a single high safety often means man coverage underneath that the mesh concept is designed to exploit. Watch the linebackers at the snap since aggressive blitzing linebackers vacate the shallow crossing lanes and open up the mesh routes for easy yardage. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, user a lurking linebacker or nickel defender to sit on the mesh crossers and force the quarterback to the Y out instead. Press man coverage on the outside receivers combined with man coverage on the Y is the biggest counter to this play, since it removes the natural rub advantage the mesh creates. Post-snap, key the flow of the middle linebacker since if he bites hard on the crossers, the Y out route into the vacated flat becomes the easiest and fastest completion available.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick shift to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since the mesh concept thrives against man coverage and man beater tags are the reason this play exists in this set.

If the cornerback over the Y is playing tight press alignment, expect the out route to be jumped by underneath zone defenders, so be ready to reset to the mesh crossers instead.

This play excels on third and short to third and medium since the mesh rub creates natural separation and the out route gives a quick outlet against a blitz look.

Pair this with Pats Cross or Jets Crosses earlier in a series so the defense starts keying underneath crossers, then hit Mesh Y Out to exploit overaggressive linebacker flow.

Against known blitz teams, hot route the Y out to a quick slant or use it as your check versus pressure since the route breaks fast and gives the quarterback a rhythm throw.
