Deep Slot Curl is a trips-based curl concept out of the Shotgun Y Off Trips Pats set built to attack zone coverage with a deep curl route sitting down in the void behind underneath defenders. The slot receiver runs a deep curl route (typically around 15-18 yards) while the other trips receivers clear out or run shorter routes to occupy underneath defenders, opening a passing window against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells. This is a zone beater at its core, though it can work against soft man coverage if the curl runner sits down in a hole created by traffic. Primary read progression starts with the deep slot curl to see if the zone defender bites on the shorter routes, then works to the underneath outlets if the curl window closes.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a two-high safety look versus a single-high shell, since Cover 3 and Cover 4 zones with deep drops leave the intermediate curl window wide open. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they sink too deep into their zone drops, the curl sits down right in front of them for an easy completion. Beware of Cover 2 Man or man press concepts, since the slot corner or nickel defender can trail the curl route tightly and undercut the throw if the quarterback does not sell a pump or double move. Key on user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow to intermediate zone, as sharp Madden players will jump this route with a spy or robber technique to bait an interception. Look for disguised blitz packages or nano blitzes off the edge, since if protection breaks down before the curl route develops, the quarterback may be forced into a quick checkdown instead of the deep read.
Look pre-snap for two-high safety shells or Cover 3 zone drops since the deep slot curl thrives when linebackers and safeties bail into deep zones and leave the intermediate area soft.
Use your hot routes to adjust the outside trips receivers into quick outs or streaks if you see man coverage, since that forces the defense to declare and opens the curl window against zone-heavy defenses.
This play excels on second and medium to long yardage situations where defenses expect a checkdown or shorter route combo and instead get hit with a sit-down curl route that settles behind linebackers.
Pair Deep Slot Curl with Y Off Trips Close or X Curl in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and intermediate curl concepts, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
If the user-controlled defender jumps the curl route, check down quickly to the shallow crosser or flat route since the defense has likely sold out to stop the primary read.
