Mtn HB Corner is a play-action man beater out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Pats that uses HB motion to distort the defensive front and shift the trips look before the snap. The HB releases into a corner route out of the backfield, working the flat to deep sideline zone vacated by the motion, while the trips side runs a mountain concept stacking levels to hold safeties and clear space underneath. The primary read starts with the HB corner route against man coverage or blown assignments off the motion, then progresses into the trips side stacked routes for zone beaters or if the linebacker fails to carry the back out of the backfield.
Watch the defender assigned to the HB during motion. If he mirrors the back across the formation rather than staying put, that confirms man coverage and the corner route wins immediately. Key the safety alignment before the snap. Two high safeties suggest the mountain concept on the trips side will be contested deep, but the HB corner route into the vacated flat becomes the easier throw. Post-snap, track the flat defender or nickel corner responsible for the underneath zone. If he sinks with the trips routes instead of staying home on the HB, the corner route breaks open against zone coverage too. Beware Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a disciplined curl-flat defender, since they can undercut the HB corner route while the deep third defender caps the sideline. Look for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the flat or hook zone. A smart user player can bait the quarterback into the corner route throw and jump the route for a pick if the quarterback does not manipulate the coverage with eyes first.
Use the HB motion pre-snap to identify man versus zone. If a linebacker or safety follows the back across the formation, you are getting man coverage and the corner route is live immediately off the snap.
Attack this on second and long or third and medium when defenses are more willing to play zone shells, since the mountain concept on the trips side punishes zone drops that leave the deep sideline soft.
Hot route the backside X into a quick out or slant if the defense shows single high safety rotation, giving yourself a checkdown away from the trips congestion.
Pair this play with Mtn Corners or Mtn Y Poco in your call sheet since they share the same trips shell but attack different levels, forcing the defense to guess whether you are hitting the HB out of the backfield or working the intermediate routes on the trips side.
Snap the ball quickly once you see the HB uncovered after motion, because user defenders who recognize the corner concept late will have a hard time recovering once the back gets vertical toward the sideline.
