Whip Dig

Shotgun·Y Off Trips Pats·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Whip Dig is a trips-based man beater built around a whip route from the slot that snaps back inside to shake off tight coverage, paired with a dig route running underneath the whip from the opposite side of the formation. The whip creates instant separation against man defenders by faking vertical before cutting hard back to the middle, while the dig sits behind it as a secondary window against zone drops or if the whip route gets jumped. Protection is a standard shotgun five man slide, so the primary read progression starts with the whip out of trips, then works to the dig, and finishes with the checkdown to the back if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, since a two high shell tells you zone drops will squat on the whip route and force you to the dig instead. Watch the slot cornerback's press alignment, tight man technique on the trips receiver signals the whip will get open quickly on the inside break. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sits in the hole and eyes the whip he can jump the route and undercut the throw. User controlled defenders playing a lurk technique in the intermediate middle zone are the biggest threat to this concept, so double check for a spy or rat defender before committing to the dig. Watch for disguised blitzes off the edge, since a six man rush overloads the five man slide protection and forces an early or inaccurate throw before routes develop.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners playing tight press on the trips side, since the whip route thrives against man and creates a rub for the dig behind it.

If the defense shows single high safety or man match principles, throw the whip on time as soon as the receiver plants and cuts back inside, before the underneath defender can react.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see a blitz look, since the five man protection can break down against six man pressure.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short situations where the whip route's quick separation matches the distance needed for a first down.

Pair Whip Dig with Y Off Trips Close or Jets Curl in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and intermediate crossing concepts out of the same trips look.
