Mtn Empty HB Sluggo empties the backfield out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Pats, sending the HB in motion to create a five wide look that forces man coverage to declare or exposes zone leverage instantly. The sluggo (slant and go) from the boundary is the primary route, designed to stack the corner on the slant fake before breaking vertically for a big play shot down the field. This is a man beater at its core, with the trips side working shorter option routes and a dig to hold the middle defenders and clear space for the sluggo release.
Read the corner over the sluggo receiver at the snap, if he sits low and jumps the slant fake you have a clean release for the go route and should throw with anticipation. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since single high leaves the sluggo in a true one on one matchup while two high adds a deep defender to that half of the field. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking underneath the sluggo route, since aggressive users will bait the slant fake and jump the vertical stem, so pump fake or move to your check down if you see hesitation. Track linebacker and safety reaction to the HB motion, a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and green lights the sluggo shot. This play struggles against disguised zone blitzes where the defense rotates coverage post snap, so if you see extra rushers off the edge with delayed drops, get the ball out quickly to the trips side hot route instead of holding for the deep shot.
Motion the HB pre-snap and watch how the defense reacts, if a linebacker or safety follows across the formation you have a strong indicator of man coverage and the sluggo should win outside.
Use this play on second or third and long when you need an explosive gain, since the sluggo takes time to develop and needs a clean pocket or a hot route check to a quick option route against pressure.
Against single high safety looks, trust the sluggo one on one on the boundary corner since the deep safety is occupied by the trips side vertical or dig concept.
Pair this play with Mtn Empty Dbl Unders or Mtn Empty Smash Y-post in the same personnel and formation to keep the defense guessing between quick game and deep shots without changing your presnap picture.
If the defense shows two high shells, hot route the sluggo receiver to a slant or speed out to avoid throwing into a bracket, and lean on the trips side option routes as your checkdown progression.
