RPO Read Bubble is a classic run pass option out of the Wing Slot Wk formation in Shotgun, giving the QB a pre-determined key on a second level defender to decide between handing off the run and throwing the bubble screen. The diagram shows the HB running an inside zone track behind the offensive line while the slot receiver bubbles out to the flat as the alert throw, with the outside receiver running a vertical clear route to occupy the corner and remove any underneath help. The primary read progression is the box count and the flow of the alert defender (usually the slot corner or overhang linebacker): if he crashes down on the run fit, pull and throw the bubble, if he sits or bails to cover the bubble, hand the ball off into the vacated running lane.

Defensive Reads

Watch the slot corner or overhang defender pre-snap, if he is sitting inside the box in run support he is vulnerable to the bubble throw. If the defense shows a two high safety shell with soft corners, expect the alert defender to squat on the bubble, favor the run at the mesh point. Man coverage on the perimeter with no underneath help is a green light to throw the bubble quickly before the corner can close the distance. Blitzes off the edge or interior nano blitzes can be neutralized since the RPO mesh point forces the QB into a quick decision, get the ball out fast rather than holding it. User controlled defenders who jump the bubble route immediately after the snap are baiting the QB, use the flow of the box defenders as the real key rather than reacting to the user jump.

Usage Tips

Check the numbers in the box before the snap, if the defense is outnumbered against the run give the ball to the HB and trust your blocking scheme.

Key the alert defender on the bubble side immediately after the snap, his first step tells you whether to pull or hand off.

Use the flick or hot route to adjust the outside receiver into a deep clear or comeback if the defense is playing aggressive man coverage on the perimeter.

This play works best on early downs (1st and 2nd) when defenses are still guessing between run and pass fronts.
