RPO Peek Post is a run pass option out of Shotgun Wing Slot Wk that pairs an inside handoff read with a two man route package to the boundary. The outside receiver runs a vertical post that stems upfield and breaks across the middle of the field, while the inside slot receiver runs a quick out to the flat as the peek route. The quarterback reads the play side alpha defender post snap: hand off on the run track if the box stays light, or pull and throw the post if the defender bites down, with the flat route as a built in checkdown against overplayed coverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alpha defender's initial step after the snap, if he squats or sits flat footed he is reading run first and the post window opens immediately. Man coverage on the outside receiver with no safety help over the top is the biggest tell to trust the post shot for an explosive gain. Zone coverage with a deep half safety rotating to the post side shrinks the throwing window, so respect the flat route instead in that shell. User controlled defenders lurking near the flat can jump the peek route, so do not force the checkdown if you see a defender sitting in that throwing lane. Heavy blitz packages with the alpha defender crashing hard usually mean no safety help behind him, which favors pulling and throwing the post immediately.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and identify whether the defense has six or more in the box, since a light box tells you to lean run pre-snap.
Key the play side alpha defender immediately after the snap, if he crashes down on the run track pull the ball and attack the post window behind him.
Use the flat route as your answer against aggressive underneath zone drops or when a linebacker sits on the post read, it is a safe RPO checkdown.
Pair this call with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same set so the defense cannot key on the post shot every snap, keeping the alpha defender honest.
Best used on early downs in the 1st and 2nd and short to medium range where defenses are more willing to sell out against the run, opening the post shot behind them.
