User controlled players should key the mesh point immediately after the snap rather than biting on the RB fake, since a disciplined user defender at the mesh point can blow up both options. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with an extra run defender in the box (eight man fronts) tend to shut this down quickly because there is no space on the perimeter for the QB to escape into if he pulls it.

Usage Tips

Use Read Option on early downs when the defense shows a light box with only six or fewer defenders in the run fit to maximize your blocking advantage. Check the defensive end alignment pre-snap since a wide crashing end is an automatic keep read for the QB while a sitting end who stays home means you should plan to hand it off. Pair this with RPO Zone Alert Smoke or RPO Peek Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the zone read fake and the quick perimeter throw off similar formation and motion. Attack base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that do not have a designated read defender assigned, since user players controlling the edge late will get caught flat footed by the mesh point. Mix in QB Sweep and QB Power from this playbook after running Read Option a few times so the defense cannot sit on the zone read keep and has to respect multiple QB run schemes.
