The trips side runs a stack of hitch and out breaking routes near the sideline while the inside receiver climbs vertically on a seam read against the middle of the field, with the HB releasing on a check swing look off the backfield. This is a man beater built around the backside fade for a one on one shot, with the seam and swing serving as underneath outlets if the corner has outside leverage. Primary read progression starts with the backside fade for a big play, then works to the inside seam, and finally checks down to the HB release if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Watch the backside cornerback's press alignment presnap: if he is playing off man with outside shade, the fade wins immediately on a lob throw to the boundary. Identify single high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 since the fade becomes a jump ball opportunity against a corner without deep safety help, but if the safety is showing two high presnap the fade is riskier and the seam becomes the better read. Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap: if he sits and reads the HB release, the seam route window tightens and you should pump fake off him before working to the fade side. Beware user controlled safeties lurking over the top in Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, as a good user will jump the fade route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Look for man blitz packages with the backside corner in press: this play struggles versus disciplined bracket coverage or double teams on the fade, since the seam and swing become your only viable outlets.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check the backside cornerback alignment: if he is playing inside leverage or shaded to help on the seam, throw the fade with anticipation before the safety can rotate over the top.
Use this play on second and long or third and short to medium since the fade offers a home run shot while the seam and swing give you a safe underneath completion.
Hot route the trips side hitch into a quick out if you see man coverage with a linebacker trying to match up on him, giving you an easy pitch and catch against a slower defender.
Pair this call with RPO Alert Smoke or RPO Zone Alert Smoke earlier in a series to get the defense biting on run action, then hit them with the backside fade once safeties start creeping into the box.
Against zone shells, work the inside seam route first since it settles into soft spots vacated by underneath defenders, then use the HB check swing as your zone beater checkdown if the middle is clogged.
