Inside Zone

Watch linebacker depth before the snap, stacked linebackers sitting at five yards or closer signal a run blitz look that Inside Zone can gash if you get vertical quickly through the hole. Identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high alignments often mean an extra run defender in the box and favor cutback reads rather than forcing the frontside gap. Against Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a spy, expect a fast flowing linebacker to the playside, so key the backside guard's block to set up the cutback before committing north. Man beater blitzes with slanting defensive linemen can still be handled by zone blocking rules, but watch for a delayed A gap blitzer since that is the primary defender who kills this run if unaccounted for. If the defense shows a heavy nickel or dime look with light boxes, this play beats it easily since the numbers favor the run, but versus true 46 or bear fronts you should shift to Same Side Zone or a screen from this set instead.
