Scissors Z Spot combines a scissors concept from the trips side with a spot route from the Z receiver, creating natural picks and separation windows underneath and intermediate. The scissors action crosses a corner route and a slant to confuse man defenders through traffic, while the spot route sits down in the flat to underneath zone to give the quarterback a quick, high percentage outlet. This is primarily a man beater built around natural rubs, though the spot route also gives it enough zone coverage answers to function against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells. The primary read progression starts with the scissors crossers to see which defender gets picked off, then works down to the spot route as the checkdown against sinking zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the outside receivers, since the scissors crossers are designed to rub off defenders in man to man. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops by reading linebacker depth at the snap, which signals you should prioritize the spot route as your primary target instead of forcing the crossers. Key on the underneath defender assigned to the spot route area, since a user controlled linebacker sitting there can jump the route and bait a turnover. Look for disguised blitzes off the edge or interior gaps before the snap, since a hot route adjustment on the spot runner to a quick out can beat pressure before it arrives. Recognize when a lurking safety or nickel defender is sitting in the middle of the field, since that defender can undercut both the scissors crossers and the spot route if the quarterback holds the ball too long.

Usage Tips

Check the corner and safety alignment before the snap to confirm man coverage, since the scissors crossing routes are most dangerous when defenders are locked in with no help over the top.

Use the spot route as your answer against zone drops if you see linebackers sitting in hook zones or a Cover 3 shell, since the natural pick from the scissors action will not develop as cleanly.

Hot route the spot runner to a quick out or flat route on third and short to give yourself an immediate high percentage completion against blitz looks.

Pair this play with Stick or Deep Stick earlier in a series so defenders start expecting quick underneath throws, then hit the scissors crossers for explosive gains once they jump the shallow routes.

Combine this call with Four Verticals or Mtn PA Flood in the same set to keep the defense honest, since both plays attack similar areas but punish different coverage rotations.
