H Mtn Mesh Post out of Shotgun Trey Open HB Str is a man beater built around a mesh concept underneath with a post breaking over the top. The two shallow crossers rub off each other to shake man defenders while the post attacks the middle of the field behind that traffic, and the HB releases as a checkdown option out of the backfield with the offensive line sliding protection to handle four man rushes. The primary read progression starts at the post to see if the safety bites on the mesh traffic, then works down to the mesh crossers for the rub, and finishes at the HB check down if the pocket collapses.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone since that defender can jump the mesh crossers and bait a turnover. Two high safety shells with the safety leaning toward the post side signal it is time to check down to the HB early instead of forcing the post throw. Man coverage with linebackers matched up on the mesh routes is the ideal matchup since the rub will spring at least one crosser open. Watch for a blitz off the edge since the mesh concept holds the ball longer and this play is vulnerable to a well timed nano blitz if protection is not adjusted. If cover 3 rotates a defender into the deep middle third, the post window shrinks fast, so be ready to pull it down to the checkdown or hot route the post into a deep in.

Usage Tips

Use this against man coverage looks where you see press corners or MEG technique pre-snap since the mesh rub is designed to create separation against man defenders.

If you see two high safeties pre-snap, key the post route first because it has room to work into the vacated middle of the field before the safety can rotate down.

Hot route the mesh crossers deeper or flatten them out based on linebacker depth if you see linebackers sitting low in the mesh window.

This works well on second and medium to second and long since it takes a full progression read and needs time to develop, so keep it out of obvious pressure downs.
