Mtn Spot Y Corner is a Spot concept variant out of the Trey Open HB Str set that pairs the classic Spot combo (flat, hitch, corner) on one side with the Y (TE) breaking to a corner route for a two-level high low read on the boundary. This is a man and zone beater because the underneath flat and hitch settle into throwing lanes against zone drops while the corner route stretches the sideline against man coverage, especially if you get a favorable matchup on the TE. The primary read progression starts with the flat defender: if he sits, hit the hitch sitting behind him, and if he widens with the flat route, work the TE corner or backside spot combo depending on the leverage of the safety.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender first since squatting on the flat route opens the TE corner behind him Read the safety over the TE side pre snap, if he is shaded outside or rotated to that side the corner route will be contested Identify cover 2 shells because the corner will be sandwiched between the corner defender and the deep safety, forcing you to check down to the spot combo instead Look for man coverage indicators like a defender lined up head up on the TE with no safety help, this is the green light to throw the corner route with confidence Beware of a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow flat area since he can jump both the flat route and the hitch, forcing an adjustment to the corner or backside route

Usage Tips

Check the flat defender pre snap to decide whether the underneath spot or the corner route will be open first

Use motion or a quick glance to identify if the defense is playing a two high shell before the snap since single high safeties tend to bite on the flat and open up the corner route

Hot route the backside receiver into a deep dig or drag if you diagnose zone coverage to give yourself a true backside answer against cover 3 or cover 4

Call this on second and medium or third and short to medium since the flat and hitch give you a quick underneath answer while the corner route is a chunk play if the defense bites

Pair this with RPO Peek Hitch or RPO Zone Peek Bubble earlier in a series so the defense respects the quick game before you hit them with the TE corner shot
