Breakdown

Double Ins is a man beater built around a pair of inside breaking routes designed to sit in the middle of the field just past the linebacker level. The Trey Open bunch look creates natural rub potential at the snap, which forces man defenders to fight through traffic while the two in routes settle into throwing lanes behind the second level. The primary read progression starts with the near side in route working across the middle, then works to the second in route on the backside, with the check down out of the backfield as the safety valve against pressure or if both ins get taken away.

Defensive Reads

Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals zone coverage and a fast downhill trigger signals a blitz or man coverage with underneath help. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the passing lane between the two in routes, since that lurk threat is the biggest risk to this concept and can jump the throwing window. Check the safety rotation post snap, since Cover 3 rotation to the play side opens a throwing lane on the backside in route while the flat defender is occupied. Man coverage with press corners at the line is where this play excels, since the bunch alignment creates natural traffic that delays the defender's release on the underneath routes. Cover 2 with hard flat defenders and Cover 4 quarters shells are the toughest matchups for this concept, since the underneath defenders can sit on the shorter in routes and squeeze the throwing windows before they develop.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a shift to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, since the in routes benefit from natural picks against man coverage out of the Trey Open bunch alignment.

Look for single high safety shells before the snap, since Double Ins thrives against Cover 1 and Cover 3 where the underneath zone defenders have to sink and can be split by the two in breakers.

If you see two deep safeties showing Cover 2 or Cover 4, hot route one of the in routes into a deeper crossing route or a dig to stress the hole between the underneath zone and the safeties.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Bubble or RPO Peek Hitch on early downs to keep the defense honest on run fits, then come back to Double Ins on second and medium once linebackers start cheating toward the box.

This play is best used on second or third and short to medium since the in routes need room to settle before the sticks, and it pairs well as a follow up to Four Verticals or Deep Stick to punish defenses sitting on shorter zone drops.
