Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens to the corner route the stick is open immediately for an easy pitch and catch Identify man coverage by tracking the motion defender, if a defender shadows the motion man across the field expect man beaters to hit against blitzes or press coverage Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, the stick sitter will often find a soft spot between the flat and hook defenders, throw with anticipation before the linebacker can drop underneath Beware disguised blitzes off the edge, since the stick concept relies on a quick timing throw, a nano blitz or edge pressure can force an early or inaccurate throw before the route develops This play struggles against aggressive Cover 2 with a hard flat squeeze, since both the corner route and stick can be taken away if the corner sinks and the linebacker sits directly in the stick window

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can attack the stick route with confidence

Against zone shells, key the flat defender, if he sits low the stick window opens immediately underneath him, if he widens with the flat route the stick sitter is wide open behind him

Hot route the backside shallow drag into a deeper dig or comeback against teams that roll coverage away from the stick side, this keeps the concept balanced versus both single high and two high shells

This play works best on second and short to medium distance where defenders are more willing to sit in underneath zones, giving the stick route a clean throwing lane
