Breakdown

HB Cross Buck out of Shotgun Split Slot Offset shows a backfield crossing action between the HB and FB, with the HB running a shallow cross underneath while the FB works an angle route into the opposite flat. The three receivers to the trips side run a vertical stem package to hold the safeties and clear space for the crossing action underneath, while the offensive line sets in max protect to account for the mesh point exchange. This is primarily a man beater since the backfield cross creates natural rub traffic on man defenders, and the first read progression is HB on the shallow cross with the FB angle route as the checkdown against blitz or lurking linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners playing tight press, this is the shell that gets exploited hardest by the backfield cross. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow and reads the mesh point quickly he can undercut the HB crosser and blow up the primary read. Key on any user-controlled defender flashing down into the backfield cross lane, that lurk threat is designed specifically to bait the QB into an errant throw over the middle. Versus zone, look for a hook or curl defender sitting in the same window as the crossing HB, this coverage shell forces the QB to check down to the FB angle route instead. Post-snap, track the safeties, if they stay high and do not rotate down to help on the crossers, the QB should trust the man beater concept and throw with anticipation.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage since the backfield mesh creates natural picks against man defenders trailing the HB and FB.

Check the middle of the field pre-snap, if you see two safeties deep with linebackers sitting shallow, be ready to hot route one of the trips receivers into a deeper crosser to stress the seams.

Use the FB angle route as your answer versus blitz since it releases quickly into the flat and gives the QB a fast outlet if the mesh gets jumped.

Pair this play with Mtn Y Cross or Mtn PA Y Cross later in a series so the defense has to respect both the shallow crossing action and the deeper crossing concept from the same formation.

Avoid calling this against heavy zone shells with a robber underneath since the shallow cross sits right in the throwing lane of a hook zone defender.
