Breakdown

RB Sweep Rt is an outside zone run play designed to get the running back working laterally to the right edge before turning upfield. The offensive line executes reach blocks to seal the edge defender while the play side guard and tackle climb to the second level, and the fullback or slot blocker cracks down on the first threat outside the tackle box to spring the runner into space. This is a run play built to beat overloaded interior fronts and light box counts, with the primary read being the play side edge defender and how fast the linebackers flow to the sideline.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker first since a hard crash inside opens the cutback lane while a wide contain defender forces the bounce outside. Key the flow of the middle linebacker post snap, if he immediately flows to the sideline the cutback lane behind him is there for the taking. Check strong safety alignment before the snap, a safety cheating down into the box signals run support and makes the edge tougher to turn the corner on. This run gets stopped by disciplined gap-sound fronts with a scrape exchange between the defensive end and linebacker, since that eliminates both the cutback and the edge. User-controlled defenders flying downhill to the play side are the biggest threat, so if you see a defender jump the run pre-snap consider audibling to a play-action or RPO from this same set instead.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive box count before the snap and only run this if you have a numbers advantage or the box is light, since this play struggles into stacked fronts. If the defense shows a hard edge with a contain defender crashing down, be ready to cut this back inside behind the pulling blockers rather than forcing it outside. Use the right stick or user control on your lead blocker to seal the alley defender manually against aggressive user linebackers who fly to the sideline. Pair this with RPO Counter Read or RPO Read Cntr out of the same set so the defense has to respect both the sweep action and a cutback run read, keeping linebackers honest. Run this on early downs or short yardage when you want a positive, low risk gain and want to set up play-action shots like Mtn PA Stutter Go later in the series once the defense starts overplaying the edge.
