RB Sweep Rt is a perimeter run play out of Shotgun Split Slot Offset that pulls the offensive line to the right and sends the running back on an outside sweep path to attack the edge before the defense can rally. The blocking scheme relies on a lead blocker and pulling guard to seal the edge defender while the frontside tackle and slot receiver work to the second level, turning this into a numbers game against light boxes. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, so the primary read is simply hitting the alley off the pulling blocker's hip and pressing the sweep to the sideline before cutting upfield off the first color you see in the alley.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker at the snap, if they crash down hard on the pulling guard the sweep bounces outside for a big gain. Identify user controlled defenders flowing to the sideline early, aggressive user pursuit can outrun the blocking scheme and blow up the play behind the line. Check safety depth and alignment pre-snap, a single high safety cheating late to the sweep side signals man coverage and an open cutback lane if the corner bites on run action. Against a nine man front or overloaded blitz to the sweep side, this play has almost no answer since the pulling blockers get outnumbered immediately. Zone defenses with linebackers reading run fits slowly are the best matchup, look for hesitation from the middle linebacker as your green light to attack the edge.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only call this against six or fewer defenders in the box since sweeps get swallowed by stacked fronts.

Look for the defensive end or outside linebacker crashing hard inside on run fits, that leaves a wide open alley for the sweep to bounce outside.

Use this play on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, to keep the defense honest and set up misdirection later in the drive.

Pair this with RPO Counter Read or Speed Option from the same set so the defense has to respect both the sweep action and the backside cutback, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.

If the defense shows an overloaded front or a hard edge crash defender pre-snap, consider hot routing to Mtn RPO Read Swing Wk or bailing to a quick game concept instead since the sweep has no answer built in against a scraping defensive end.
