Mtn Inside Zone is a shotgun run play out of the Split Slot Offset personnel package that sends the HB on a pre-snap motion across the formation before the snap to check the defensive alignment and potentially draw a defender out of position. Up front the offensive line executes an inside zone blocking scheme, with double teams at the point of attack and combo blocks climbing to the second level to seal off linebackers. This is a downhill run play designed to beat base fronts and light boxes, with the primary read being the play side double team gap first, then bending back to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Check the linebacker depth before the snap since stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that inside zone struggles to handle without a quick cutback read. Watch the defensive line alignment, if the interior defensive tackles are shaded into the play side gap it clogs the double team and forces an early bend to the backside. Look for safeties creeping down into the box, a light box with only one deep safety usually means the run has room, while two safeties staying deep with linebackers filling gaps signals a run stop look. Man coverage on the perimeter combined with a stacked box is the ideal read to hand this off, since the defense has committed extra bodies to stop the run action lanes are still soft against slow flowing linebackers. Avoid this play against heavy blitz packages or defenses selling out with edge pressure on the play side, since the blocking scheme needs time to develop the double team push before climbing to the second level.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap HB motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety over the top, which tells you whether the box is heavy or light. Call this against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with only six or seven in the box since inside zone loses value against stacked eight man fronts. On early downs like first and ten or second and short, this play sets up explosive play-action shots later in the drive off the same look.
