Breakdown

Mtn Zone WK is an inside zone run out of the Shotgun Split Slot Offset set with 20 personnel, featuring a weak side motion that shifts the offset back across the formation before the snap. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sliding as a unit to seal running lanes to the weak side while the H-back or motion man cracks down to help wall off the edge. This is a run play with no pass option attached, and the primary read is the running back's aiming point off the zone flow, pressing the play side crease and cutting off the leverage of the first down lineman past the double team.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow and flowing hard to the motion, the backside cutback lane will be wide open. Check safety alignment for run support cheating down into the box, which signals a run blitz or force look that can be exploited with the RPO pass options in this set. Post-snap, key the first down lineman past the double team block, that defender determines whether the back should press the line or bounce it outside. This run is vulnerable to a hard slant or run blitz timed to the snap count, since zone blocking needs a beat to develop double teams and seal gaps. Against a stacked front with linebackers reading run keys instantly, this play loses its cutback advantage, so lean on play-action or RPO calls from the same set instead.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone by watching if a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

This play works best on early downs (first or second down) when you need a clean gap read without pressure of a long-yardage conversion.

Pair this with Mtn RPO Peek Stick or RPO Zone Bubble from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run fit and are forced to respect the perimeter throw.

If the defense stacks the box with an extra linebacker or safety after the motion, consider audibling to Mtn Stutter Go or Mtn PA Stutter Go to attack the vacated coverage instead.

Take the zone read one gap at a time, do not force it outside if the double team at the point of attack is winning inside, trust the scheme fit.
