Breakdown

Inside Zone Lt is a shotgun zone run play out of the Split Slot Offset set with 20 personnel on the field. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping laterally to the left with the HB taking a handoff and pressing the left A gap before reading his blocks, while the QB carries out a fake to the flat area behind the line. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression is frontside gap to backside cutback, letting the HB press the hole and cut off the double team blocks based on linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the strong side linebacker depth, if he is stacked tight to the line he is likely crashing the play side gap so plan your cutback read early. Watch safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shell often means light boxes which favors this inside zone look, while two deep safeties can still leave the box vulnerable if corners are playing off. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and mike linebacker, if they get sealed by the double team the play side cutback lane opens up. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side, that flow is your signal to cut the ball back against the grain. This play struggles against gap-exchange run blitzes and stacked fronts with an extra linebacker crashing downhill, so have HB Draw or Speed Option ready as a counter if you see that look repeatedly.

Usage Tips

Run this early in a series to establish tendency data and set up your play-action shots later from the same Split Slot Offset look.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run like HB Sweep or RB Sweep Rt instead.

Use the left stick to press the play side gap and let your blocks develop before committing to a cutback lane.

Pair this with Mtn RPO Peek Stick or RPO Zone Bubble from the same formation so linebackers hesitate on run fits when they see the same personnel and alignment.

Best used on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your pass concepts out of this set.
