Mtn RPO Peek Swing Wk is a run pass option out of Shotgun Split Slot Offset with 20 personnel. The diagram shows the run action bending left behind the offensive line while the QB peeks a swing route flaring out to the left flat as the underneath outlet. This is an RPO built to attack light boxes and overaggressive linebackers, with the primary read being the box count and the flow of the second level defenders before deciding to hand off, keep, or pull and flip it to the swing.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebacker depth and flow at the snap, if they crash hard to the run action that is the cue the QB will pull and throw the swing. Identify if the defense is playing zone with flat defenders sitting underneath, since that can take away the swing read and force the give. Look for man coverage on the running back out of the backfield, which is the biggest vulnerability for this concept since the swing becomes an easy pitch and catch. On defense, user a linebacker or slot defender to sit on the swing route flat area to bait the QB into a bad decision. Overload blitzes from the offset side can disrupt both the run gap and the swing throwing lane if timed with the snap.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre snap and count the box, if it is light or the linebackers are cheating toward the run action, take the give and let the zone blocking work. If a linebacker steps up hard to fill the run lane, pull it and get the ball out quick to the swing route in the flat for a numbers advantage. Use this on early downs to stay ahead of the sticks since both outcomes are low risk with high floor gains.
