Breakdown

Mtn Double Pass is a trick play out of Shotgun Split Slot Offset built off a jet motion action across the backfield before the snap. Both outside receivers run straight vertical seam routes up the numbers while the backfield action pulls defenders toward the flat with the motion man before the ball gets flipped into a pass, disguising itself as an HB sweep or jet sweep run. This is a home run shot play designed to catch overaggressive run defense and man coverage cheating down, with the primary read being whichever vertical route wins its one on one leverage against the corner, working from the boundary receiver first then working to the field side vertical.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with corners playing physical press technique gives you a clean vertical win, especially if there is no safety help rotating over the top. Watch for two deep safety shells pre-snap, if the defense stays in a two high look post-snap this play is far less effective and you should have a bail out checkdown or throwaway plan. Identify blitz packages that send extra defenders toward the motion or run action side, since a hard sell on the sweep fake can pull an extra defender out of coverage and open the vertical route. Zone coverage with linebackers sitting on shallow crossers can still bracket the seams if the defense reads pass immediately off the formation, so disguise timing on the motion matters. If the user controlled defender jumps the run fake or flows hard toward the sweep side, take the vertical route away from that flow since it will be in the biggest void.

Usage Tips

Only call this when the defense has shown aggressive run fits or has been biting on your jet motion and sweep concepts earlier in the drive.

Check safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are sitting shallow at 8 to 10 yards or you see man coverage indicators with corners playing tight press, this is a green light shot play.

Use motion to bait linebackers and second level defenders into flowing toward the sweep action, then trust the vertical routes to work behind that flow.

Sequence this after running HB Sweep, RB Sweep Rt, or Mtn RPO Swing QB Draw a few times in the same drive so the defense keys run action and steps up before you pull the trick pass.

Best used on early downs or in plus territory shot situations, not as a desperation third and long call since both routes take time to develop deep.
