Mtn Double Pass is a trick play built out of Shotgun Split Slot Offset that disguises itself as a jet sweep or end around before flipping into a downfield passing concept. Pre-snap motion sweeps a receiver across the formation, and the ball is pitched or handed off before the trick handler pulls up to throw. Both outside receivers release vertically on go routes up the sideline while the underneath action sells run, making this a big play designed to catch overaggressive run defense or blitz-heavy fronts flowing hard to the flat. The primary read progression is outside in: the trick passer looks to the far vertical first, then works back to the near sideline go route if the defense rotates coverage to the initial motion.

Defensive Reads

Key the cornerbacks at the snap: if they crash down hard to defend the perimeter run action, both verticals will be open behind them for an explosive gain. Look for single high safety shells (Cover 3 or Cover 1) rotating toward the motion side, since that leaves the backside go route isolated one on one with no help over the top. Watch linebacker and slot defender flow, if they overpursue the sweep fake and flip their hips to run with it, the double pass window opens immediately for the trick passer. Defenses that stay disciplined with two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4) or spy the reverse action with a linebacker take away this concept, since both verticals get squeezed with deep help. Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or in situations where the defense expects run, since the entire design lives off selling the sweep action before the throw.

Watch pre-snap safety depth: if both safeties are shaded to one side or crashing down to respect run fits, that is your green light because the vertical routes will be uncovered on the backside.

Use this play sparingly, once or twice a game, so defenses cannot key on the flanker motion and jump the pitch before the double pass develops.

Pair it in a sequence with Mtn Triple Option Rt, Speed Option, or HB Sweep from the same set so the defense has already seen similar motion and flow tendencies, making the Double Pass look identical until the ball is in the air.

If the defense shows man coverage press outside, expect the corners to bail late once they see the run action, so trust the vertical timing and throw with anticipation rather than waiting for full separation.
