Breakdown

Speed Option is a shotgun run play out of the Split Slot Offset set with 20 personnel on the field. The diagram shows the QB and HB attacking the left edge together, with the QB reading the read man on the edge and pitching to the HB if that defender crashes down. The offensive line blocks down at the point of attack while the backside is left unblocked to create the option look, making this a pure run play designed to attack the edge with numbers rather than a pass concept. The primary read progression for the QB is the first unblocked defender outside the tackle box: keep it if he stays wide, pitch to the HB if he squeezes inside.

Defensive Reads

Key on the defensive end or outside backer aligned over the offensive tackle since he is the option read the QB attacks. If that defender sits and reads instead of crashing, the QB will likely keep and cut upfield through the alley. Watch linebacker depth presnap, shallow linebackers can fill the alley quickly and blow up both the keep and pitch options. Against a hard edge blitz or crashing 4-3 under front this play struggles because the pitch man arrives too fast for the HB to get outside. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is the best shell to attack since it leaves the edge defender isolated in space.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or short yardage when defenses are stacked to stop inside runs, since the edge attack punishes overpursuit. Check the alignment of the defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap, if they are crashing hard on run downs the pitch read becomes automatic. Use the left analog stick to freeze the option key defender presnap and confirm his run fit before the snap. Pair this with Inside Zone Split or Mtn Inside Zone in the same set to keep the defense honest between inside zone runs and the edge option look. Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill, pull the ball and keep with the QB since the option key will already be out of position.
