Flood from Shotgun Split Slot Offset is a classic three level flood concept designed to stretch one side of the field vertically and horizontally, making it a premier Cover 3 beater. The diagram shows the backside receiver running a deep dig across the middle, while on the flooded side the outside receiver runs a corner route, the tight end or slot man runs a vertical seam that turns into a flag, and the running back releases out of the backfield on a shallow flat route underneath. This creates a high low read on one half of the field with three distinct levels (deep corner, intermediate flag, shallow flat) forcing a single flat defender or curl to flat player to choose who to cover, and the primary read progression goes from the deep corner route to the flag or seam sitting behind it, and finally down to the checkdown flat route if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender to the flooded side after the snap, if he sinks with the flag route the flat route is open, if he sits on the flat the corner and flag routes have room to work. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest liability for this concept, so a user controlled deep defender who can jump the corner route can shut this down quickly. Two deep safety shells like Cover 2 and Cover 4 can be tough matchups since they naturally have a defender who can help over the top of the corner route. Look for zone blitzes where the flat defender to the flood side drops late or gets replaced, this can bait the quarterback into throwing the flat route into a trap. If the defense shows a hard corner blitz or nano blitz look, the quarterback needs to get the ball out on the flat route quickly since protection may break down before deeper routes develop.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a three deep shell or press man before the snap since this concept is built to punish Cover 3 rotations and quarters shells that only have one flat defender to the flood side.

If the cornerback is playing off and the safety rotates late, throw the corner route on time before the deep defender can get over the top.

Use the flat route as your answer versus zone blitzes or when the corner route is taken away, since it gives you a quick outlet against pressure and protects against negative plays.

Pair this play with Mtn Stick Wheel or Mtn Y Stick in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between a true flood concept and a stick based quick game concept out of the same personnel and formation look.

This play shines on second and medium to long or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring man pressure.
