RPO Counter Read pairs a power counter run with a built-in pass alert, giving the QB a pre-snap and post-snap decision based on the alignment of the read defender, typically the play side linebacker or a walked-up safety. The counter blocking scheme pulls the backside guard and tackle (or fullback) to lead through the hole while the frontside crashes down, creating a natural cutback lane if the box stays light. If the read defender flows hard to stop the counter, the QB pulls it and throws a quick RPO route (usually a slant, stick, or bubble concept depending on route assignment) attacking the vacated space, making this both a run play and an RPO in one call. This is a solid zone beater against light boxes and undisciplined linebackers who bite on run flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker or overhang defender immediately after the snap, if he crashes down to fill the counter lane that is your green light to throw the RPO route into space. Look for safeties cheating into the box pre-snap, a stacked box with only one deep safety usually signals the defense is selling out to stop the run, favoring the pass side of the read. User-controlled defenders who spy the mesh point or jump the counter lane late can bait you into a bad handoff, so trust the mesh read and pull it if you see a defender sitting on the run action. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers square and safeties deep, since those looks take away both the cutback lane and the quick throw window. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge can disrupt the counter's timing, so be ready to throw the RPO quickly rather than letting the play develop when you see pressure alignments pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and count defenders inside the tackles versus your blockers, if the count favors the counter, plan to hand it off unless the read defender sits still. Identify single high versus two high shells presnap, single high safeties often mean an extra run defender in the box so lean toward the RPO throw. Use hot routes sparingly here since the RPO read is already built in, but you can motion the slot or adjust the flat route depth to manipulate the read defender's eyes. This play shines on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) where defenses expect base run fits and linebackers are more likely to sell out on run flow.
