Breakdown

Inside Zone Split is a base zone run play out of Shotgun Split Slot Offset with 20 personnel on the field. The offensive line steps in unison to the play side, reading the frontside double teams into the second level while the HB presses the mesh point looking for the cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged. This is a run play, not a passthrough concept, so the primary read progression starts with the frontside A gap and B gap, and if the linebacker flows hard to that side, the HB should bend it back to the backside cutback lane vacated by pursuit.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth before the snap, single high shells with the strong safety cheated into the box signal an aggressive run fit that this zone scheme can gash with the cutback. Watch the playside defensive end and 3 technique, if they get displaced by the double team the HB should stick to the frontside A or B gap. Key the backside linebacker flow, if he overruns the play chasing the zone action, cut it back immediately since that lane opens up fast. Bear fronts and heavy odd stacks with extra defensive linemen shut this down quickly since there are not enough double team advantages, look to counter with a perimeter run instead. Man coverage on the backside with a blitzing linebacker off the edge is a green light since the interior zone blocking neutralizes that pressure before it reaches the mesh point.

Usage Tips

Run this out of neutral downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium so defenses cannot key run based on distance alone.

Check the box count before the snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter concept from this set like HB Sweep or RB Sweep Rt instead.

Use the RPO Read Cntr and RPO Zone Bubble plays from this set as pre-snap window dressing so defenses cannot sit on Inside Zone Split once they see the formation.

If the Mike linebacker walks up or shows blitz pre-snap, expect a fast fill defender and be ready to hit the cutback rather than forcing the frontside hole.

Pair this with Mtn Inside Zone or Inside Zone Lt in your play-calling script to keep linebacker flow guessing on which gap the zone is actually attacking.
