Mtn PA Y Cross(1) is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Split Slot Offset that uses pre-snap motion to sell run action before the QB pumps the fake and works to a deep-crossing Y route. The blocking scheme locks in play-action pass protection with the offensive line selling run fits to freeze linebackers, while the crosser occupies the middle of the field as the Y receiver works from one side of the formation to the other, stressing man defenders across the field and settling into soft spots against zone drops. This is a man beater first (the crosser creates natural separation against man leverage) but it also holds up against zone thanks to the sit-down window the Y route creates versus off coverage. The primary read progression starts with the Y Cross coming across the field, then works to the underneath checkdown or backside option if the crosser is taken away by a flowing linebacker or robber defender.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard to fill run gaps on the play-action fake, the Y Cross window opens up immediately behind them. Key the safety shell before the snap, a two-high shell that stays two-high post-snap signals zone drops and means you should target the sit-down window of the crosser rather than trying to outrun a deep defender. Identify if the defense sends a user blitzer off the edge, since play-action protection can be vulnerable to a fast contain rusher who ignores the run fake entirely and this can force an early, inaccurate throw. Look for a robber or hook defender sitting in the middle of the field, this is the biggest threat to the Y Cross and if you see this pre-snap consider going to your checkdown or backside option immediately. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 sky or Cover 1 robber schemes where the middle of the field stays clogged, but it shreds Cover 2 man and single-high man looks where the crosser can work across the field with clean separation.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and the Y Cross becomes a high value target.
Pump the play-action fake fully before resetting your eyes downfield, rushing the fake tips off defenders and kills the linebacker freeze that makes this play effective.
Call this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) when defenses are more likely to respect the run action and bite on the fake.
Pair this play with Mtn Y Cross and Mtn PA Double Posts in the same series, running the base Y Cross concept first to get defenders keying underneath routes, then hit them with this play-action shot once linebackers start jumping the crosser.
If the crosser is taken away by a spy or lurking linebacker, hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant to keep the play alive against aggressive underneath coverage.
Use trips or bunch shifts pre-snap sparingly to disguise intent, since the formation already tips play-action to disciplined defenses reading personnel and splits.
