Y Ohio Return is a return concept out of Shotgun Doubles Stack Clamp that sends the stacked receivers on an Ohio combo (in and out breaking routes designed to sit down against zone or rub off man coverage) while the Y (tight end) works a return route back across the field underneath. This is primarily a zone beater that exploits the natural void created when the Ohio combo occupies the flat and curl zones, though it also has man beater traits thanks to the natural rub created by the stacked alignment. The primary read progression starts with the Y return route working back to the throwing side, then bounces to the Ohio combo receivers if the underneath defender chases the tight end and vacates the zone.
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sinks hard to cover the deep middle or bites on the run action, the Y return route will be wide open underneath. Identify single high safety shells (Cover 3 or Cover 1) pre-snap, since the Ohio combo naturally stresses the flat and curl defenders in those shells and creates a clean throwing window for the return route. Watch for user controlled defenders lurking near the stack, aggressive user players who jump the underneath routes early can be beaten by resetting your eyes to the backside of the concept. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, expect the corner to sit on the flat route from the stack, which means the Y return route needs to sit down quickly before the flat defender can redirect. If the defense shows a nano blitz or overload look off the edge, get the ball out on the quick return route before the interior pressure collapses the pocket.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to identify if the linebackers are keying the Y return route before the snap, since defenders that jump the return route early open up the Ohio combo for an easy pitch and catch.
This play thrives on second and medium to third and short because the return route only needs a few yards to move the chains, and it keeps the defense honest against your deeper shots in the set like Portland Y Wheel or Texas Y-Stutter Wheel.
Against man coverage, hot route the backside receiver on a quick slant or drag to give yourself a rhythm throw if the defense disguises a blitz look.
Pair this call with Curl Ohio or RPO Alert Out earlier in a drive so the defense starts keying the stack and overreacts to the Ohio combo, then hit them with the Y return route for a chunk gain.
If the defense shows heavy pressure on the edge, check into Same Side Zone or HB Mid Zone from the same personnel group to keep the play calling balanced and unpredictable.
