Breakdown

Return Bench out of Shotgun Doubles Stack Clamp is a return concept built around a bench route combo designed to attack the flat and sideline against man and off coverage. The stack alignment creates natural rub action to free the outside receiver into the bench route while an underneath option works as a hot check versus blitz. Primary read progression starts with the bench route to the sideline, then works to the underneath crosser as the outlet against zone drops or if the flat defender jumps the initial route.

Defensive Reads

Watch the corner over the stack pre snap, tight press alignment signals man coverage and a green light for the rub to spring the bench route open Key the flat defender post snap, if he sinks with the bench route the underneath crosser becomes the easy check down against zone Identify single high safety shells since Return Bench thrives against Cover 3 and Cover 1 where the boundary corner is isolated Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone, a lurking safety or linebacker can jump the bench route and bait a bad throw Beware disguised blitzes off the edge, if the defense brings pressure from the stack side the quarterback needs to get the ball out on the bench route before the protection collapses

Usage Tips

Check the stack alignment pre snap to confirm the corners are showing man or off man so the rub can create separation on the bench route

Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz before the snap so you know whether to check into the underneath outlet immediately

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if the defense shows two high safeties to punish light box zone coverage

Best called on second and short to second and medium where the sideline route stresses the boundary corner without needing a full field stretch

Pair this play with Curl Ohio or Y Ohio Return in the same set to keep defenses guessing between sideline stretches and inside crossing concepts, forcing linebackers to respect both the flat and the middle of the field
