The choice route from the stack gives the receiver a option to break in or out based on the defender's alignment, making this play adaptable against both man and zone coverage. The primary read progression starts with the choice route at the snap, reading the defender's hips, then works down to the spot route sitting in the hole, and finally to the flat as the checkdown against a hard blitz.
Read the strong safety depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow at eight yards or less expect a Cover 2 or Tampa 2 shell that funnels throws to the flat and spot routes underneath. Watch the flat defender's initial jump at the snap, if he sprints to the flat immediately the choice route should sit down for an easy pitch and catch against the vacated zone. Man coverage with a single high safety, such as Cover 1 or Cover 0, is where this play thrives since the choice route beater exploits the cornerback's outside technique. Blitz-heavy fronts with a Mike linebacker crashing downhill can be countered by getting the ball out quickly to the spot or flat route before the pocket collapses. Be cautious against a disguised Cover 4 or Cover 6 shell with two deep safeties sitting on the choice route, since that removes the natural breakaway advantage and forces a lower percentage throw into a lurking underneath defender.
Use pre-snap motion or a slide protection check to identify if the defense is showing man or zone before the snap, since the choice route's break depends on the defender's leverage. Against man coverage, key the corner's outside hip alignment and expect the choice route to break inside for a quick separation throw. Against zone shells, especially Cover 3 sink or Cover 2 with a hard flat defender, look to hit the spot route in the hole between the underneath zones. This play works best on third and short to medium distance where the spot route's settle timing matches the sticks.
