Mtn Rub Smash is a man beater built off a smash concept paired with a rub route from the stack alignment to help receivers cross paths and shake tight man coverage. The stacked receivers run a natural pick action while the smash side gives you a high low read between a corner route and an underneath flat or hitch. Your primary progression starts with the rub concept against man coverage, then works to the smash side high low if the defense shows zone.
Watch for press man coverage on the stacked receivers, this is exactly what the rub route is designed to defeat Identify two high safety shells before the snap since that tells you the smash concept corner route has room to work outside Key the underneath linebacker or nickel defender, if he sits in the flat zone read he can jump the rub route and blow up the timing Look for a lurking safety rotating late to the smash side, that user controlled defender can undercut the corner route if he reads your eyes Man match coverage with a robber underneath is the main defense that shuts this play down since it takes away both the rub separation and the smash high low
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties the smash concept high low read becomes your first priority since it punishes zone drops
If corners are pressed on the stacked receivers, trust the rub route to create natural separation against man coverage
Hot route the underneath flat runner to a quick out if you see a linebacker sitting in the short zone to bait him out of the throwing lane
This play works best on second and medium or third and short since the rub concept needs a beat to develop against tight man
Pair this call with Mtn Fk Rub or Mtn Shuffle Mesh Rail in the same set to keep defenses guessing between rub concepts and shuffle pass concepts out of the same formation
