Mtn Counter Y is the run-based misdirection play in the Shotgun Doubles Stack Clamp set, built around a counter blocking scheme with a puller kicking out the edge to open a lane for the HB while the Y (TE) works across the formation as a lead or cutback blocker. This is a run play designed to attack aggressive downhill run fits and gap-shooting defensive tackles, using the counter step and pulling linemen to create a clean crease on the play side. The primary read is patience through the mesh point: watch the puller's kick block, let the counter action develop, and identify the first crease off the Y's block before deciding between the designed hole and a cutback lane.
Pre-snap, look at the linebacker depth and alignment, if both linebackers are stacked tight to the line in a 4-3 under or heavy run front, the counter action has a strong chance to hit for a big gain. Check safety rotation before the snap, this play struggles against a hard-crashing strong safety who reads counter action quickly and fills the alley uncontested. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end, if he sits and reads rather than crashing down the line, the kick-out block may not clear the lane and you should be ready to bounce outside. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker spying the mesh point, since a smart user defender can jump the counter timing and blow up the play in the backfield. This run gets stopped cold by disciplined gap-and-a-half defense with a backside linebacker who stays home instead of flowing hard, so avoid this call against defenses that consistently show backside contain discipline.
Run this out of Doubles Stack Clamp on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense is showing a base front with linebackers sitting tight to the box, since the counter action punishes over-aggressive flow to the play call side. Check the defensive tackle alignment before the snap, if you see a 3-technique or shaded nose crashing hard, this counter scheme is designed to cut off their pursuit angle. Use the left stick to press the hole and manipulate the linebackers before committing to the cutback lane, patience is the key mechanic here. Pair Mtn Counter Y with Mtn Rub Smash or Curl Ohio from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick passing game out of an identical formation look. Avoid calling this against fast-flow linebackers who key the mesh point well, since a disciplined backside linebacker can blow up the cutback before the Y's block develops.
