Same Side Zone is a run play out of Shotgun Doubles Stack Clamp that sends the offensive line and HB to the same side of the formation, creating a zone blocking scheme with double team combo blocks at the point of attack. The design forces defenders to flow laterally before the HB decides on a cutback, making this an effective counter to overaggressive gap shooting and one gap fits. The primary read progression starts with the playside double team, then the HB reads the flow of the linebackers to find the cutback lane if the initial hole gets clogged.
Identify the linebacker depth pre snap since stacked or crashing backers signal a run blitz that can beat zone blocking on the backside Watch for a walked up safety in the box, which usually means the defense is loading the box to take away zone runs and you may need to bail into a pass concept Post snap, key the playside linebacker flow, if he overpursues with the zone action the cutback lane will open for a big gain User controlled defenders sitting in the backfield or crashing down hard off the edge can blow this play up before the double team seals the block, so be ready to cut it back immediately This run struggles against disciplined gap sound defenses that stay square and read their keys instead of flowing hard, so mix in play action shots off this look if defenses start selling out against the run
Run this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage situations to stay ahead of the chains without tipping pass intent
Check the box count pre snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, consider hot routing a receiver or motioning out of it since the numbers will not favor the run
Use the stack alignment to your advantage by identifying if defenders are playing outside leverage, since same side zone hits best when the flow forces linebackers to overrun the play
Pair this with Inside Zone from the same set to keep defenders honest on both zone directions and prevent them from keying one gap
Sequence this after a few passing snaps like RPO Alert Out or Curl Ohio so the defense stays in nickel or light boxes, then hit them with Same Side Zone for an explosive gain
Against man heavy defenses, this is a strong changeup since the blocking scheme does not rely on receiver route separation
