Breakdown

RPO Alert Out is a run pass option out of Shotgun Doubles Stack Clamp that gives the quarterback a give or throw decision based on the second level defenders. The offensive line runs an inside zone blocking scheme while the alert route triggers an out breaking pattern from the stack side, giving a quick pull option against overplayed run fits. This is a zone beater at its core, since it punishes light boxes and linebackers who crash downhill, and the primary read progression is box count first, then linebacker flow to the alert side before deciding to hand off or pull and throw the out route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify single high versus two high shells, since single high safeties often signal an extra run defender in the box which favors the alert throw Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who crash the line open up the out route immediately for an easy pitch and catch Man coverage on the stack receivers with no underneath help is a green light to pull and throw since the out route creates instant separation off the break Zone drops from cornerbacks sitting on the flat can jump the alert route, so read the corner leverage before committing to the throw Blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge or through the A gap can blow up both the run fit and the quarterback's pull read, so get rid of the ball fast or take the guaranteed handoff

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and count defenders in the tackle box against your blockers to decide if the run or the alert throw is the better numbers advantage

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage since it keeps both run and pass options live without tipping your hand

If the defense shows a two high shell with light box numbers, hand it off into the zone scheme rather than forcing the alert throw

If linebackers cheat outside toward the stack pre-snap, hot route the backside receiver into a quick option route to punish overcommitted defenses

Pair this play with Same Side Zone and Inside Zone from this same set so the defense cannot key run fits off formation tendency, then mix in Curl Ohio or Spot Choice as play action complements once you have established the RPO look
