Counter Y is a run play out of Shotgun Doubles Stack Clamp that uses a counter blocking scheme with the offensive line pulling to create a misdirection lane for the HB. The play design gets the guard and tackle to kick out the edge defender while the fullback or TE leads through the hole, forcing flowing linebackers to redirect. This is a run concept, not a pass or RPO, so the primary read is patience: let the counter action develop, key the pulling linemen, and cut off their lead blocks once the edge defender is sealed.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment. Linebackers sitting tight to the box with downhill triggers are exactly who this counter scheme is designed to exploit. Identify if the defense is in a run-heavy front like 46 or Bear, since those fronts can clog the counter lane with extra interior defenders. Post-snap, key the pulling linemen and watch for a user-controlled linebacker spying the counter action. A disciplined defender who stays home instead of flowing with the initial run action can blow up the play at the mesh point. Watch edge defenders for contain discipline. If the defense sets the edge and squeezes down on the pulling blockers, the counter lane collapses and the HB has to bounce it outside into traffic. Beware of defenses that diagnose counter quickly with fast-flow zone or Cover 3 Sky shells, since extra run support from the flow safety can erase the cutback lane before the lead blocker gets there.
Run this when the defensive front is showing quick flow or aggressive linebacker fills, since the counter action punishes overpursuit.
Use it on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your pass-heavy calls in this set.
Watch for stacked box counts pre-snap. If the defense has 8 in the box, consider going to RPO Alert Out or Same Side Zone instead to force them out of the run fit.
Pair Counter Y with Mtn Counter Y as a changeup, since the slightly different blocking angle from the Mtn variant can catch defenses that adjusted to the base counter look.
After running Counter Y a few times to set the tendency, sequence in Mtn Flood HB Sneak or HB Slip Screen off the same personnel to keep linebackers second guessing run fits versus screen looks.
