RPO Alert Flat is a run-pass option out of Pistol U Off Trips 12 personnel that pairs an inside run action with a quick flat throw read. The offensive line and HB run the base run scheme up front while the read defender (yellow line) triggers a bang route to the flat as the alert conversion. This is a numbers-based RPO built to punish light boxes: if the alert defender crashes down on the run, the QB pulls and hits the flat for an easy conversion, and if he sits in the flat, the QB hands off into a favorable run front.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alert defender pre-snap, if he is sitting flat-footed near the flat with no run support depth he is telling you to hand it off. Check the box count before the snap, six or fewer in the box means the run side is winning and the flat throw becomes the backup plan. Post-snap, key whether the flat defender crashes hard on run action, that is your green light to pull and throw the quick flat for an easy conversion. Man coverage with the corner locked outside can bait the flat throw into a hard tackle for a short gain, so respect blitz-heavy man looks and lean run. Zone shells with a linebacker sinking under the flat route can jump the throw for a turnover if the QB stares it down, so vary the read tempo to avoid a predictable user pick.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance to count the box before the snap so you already know whether you are running or throwing.
Identify the alert defender, usually a flat corner or overhang linebacker, and key his depth and shuffle at the snap to make the RPO read instantly instead of guessing.
Hot route the backside receivers into quick hitters or a slant if you expect man coverage so you have a second answer against blitz-heavy defenses.
This play shines on 2nd and short or 3rd and short since both the run and flat conversion are high-percentage gains against light or passive boxes.
Pair this with Read Option or HB Zone Wk from the same set so the defense has to respect both the zone run action and the alert flat before you go back to it, keeping the alert defender honest.
