SS Overload 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of Dime 4-1-6 that sends an overload pressure package from the strong safety and interior rushers while dropping the rest of the defense into a three deep, four under zone shell. The diagram shows five rushers converging with crossing red arrows into the A and B gaps to collapse the pocket quickly, with the two outside cornerbacks pressing their receivers before releasing into flat and deep third zones and the middle linebacker sinking to a hook zone under the deep middle safety. This is a zone beater blitz designed to disrupt the quarterback's timing before he can fully read out route combinations, with the primary read progression being get pressure home first and let the zone shell rally to the ball if the throw is delayed.
Pre-snap check the offensive line protection, if they slide protection toward the overload side the backside should be left open for a free rusher. Watch running back alignment, if the back stays in to block it confirms the offense expects pressure and may be running a hot route or sight adjustment into the blitz. Post-snap the deep third corners must stay disciplined and not bite on double moves since they are the only deep help against go routes and posts. This beats teams that rely on longer developing route combos like flood concepts or deep crossers since the pressure disrupts timing before those routes clear the underneath zones. This gets exposed by quick game concepts like hitches, stick routes, and screens, since the overload rush vacates underneath zones and cannot recover in time against a fast release.
Call this on passing downs like 2nd and long or 3rd and 7 plus where the offense is likely to take a deep drop and needs extra time to develop routes.
Before the snap identify if the offense is in a quick game formation like bunch or trips, since those tend to get the ball out fast and can beat the overload before it arrives.
User the strong safety rusher and time your blitz trigger to hit the A gap as soon as the ball is snapped, this maximizes the overload's chance of collapsing the pocket before protection can slide.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Buzz Match or Cover 3 Cloud earlier in the series so quarterbacks see a similar pre-snap shell and cannot key the overload blitz off safety depth.
Avoid calling this against empty formations with quick slants, since the underneath zone drops can be stressed if the pressure does not get home in under two seconds.
