The two edge defenders execute a Tex twist (end crashes inside, linebacker loops outside) while the two interior rushers cross through the opposite gaps, and the two corners funnel their receivers vertically into deep thirds while the slot defenders wall off any underneath breaking routes before sinking to their zone landmarks. This is a zone blitz designed to overload one side with the twisting rush while still holding three deep defenders and shallow zone help underneath, so the primary read is to trust the interior twist to collapse the pocket first and only spy the quarterback's escape lane as a secondary key.
Defensive Reads
Watch the running back's pre-snap alignment, if he stays in to block the twist has help and you should trust the coverage shell behind it. Key the offensive line's slide protection, a slide away from the twist side means the interior rushers will win quickly and you can play aggressive underneath. This beats man beater route combos and quick game because the twist disrupts timing before hitch or slant reads develop. Drop back linebackers should key any running back leaking to the flat, since Tex twists can be gap-exploited by check releases if the underneath defenders bite on the rush. Hard play-action and rollout designs can hurt this call if the offensive line picks up the twist cleanly, so be ready to convert to a spy rule or manually control a rusher if the pocket integrity holds.
Usage Tips
Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect a quick game or shotgun spread look, since the twist gets home before deep route combos develop.
Check the offensive tackles and running back pre-snap, if the back is releasing instead of blocking you have a numbers advantage on the rush and should let the Tex twist play out.
User the looping linebacker on the twist so you can manually redirect into the quarterback's throwing lane if the interior rush gets picked up.
Pair this with Cover 3 Buzz Match or SS Sim Pressure 3 in the same drive to keep quarterbacks guessing between a straight zone blitz and a matched pressure look.
