Fox Fire Zone Press is a five man zone blitz out of Dime personnel that sends pressure off the diagram's crossing X blitzers while dropping the remaining defenders into a zone shell behind it. The two outside cornerbacks press at the line and sink into short zones (the purple ellipses breaking outside), the three deep defenders (blue ellipses) rotate into deep thirds, and the underneath defender in the middle (olive ellipse) walls off any drag or crosser trying to work through the box. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while still keeping three deep, so it functions as a zone beater against slower developing man concepts and a pressure tool against the pass. The primary read is the initial pressure look off the edge, then the underneath crosser plugging any check down or drag route before working out to the deep thirds.
Watch the quarterback's eyes immediately after the snap since the fire zone pressure is designed to force a quick, inaccurate throw before deep routes develop. Key the offensive line's protection slide pre-snap: if they are not accounting for the extra rusher off the edge shown in the diagram, this call gets a free runner. Use the underneath zone defender in the middle of the field to sit on any drag, spot, or crossing route trying to settle in the shallow void behind the rush. This play beats man concepts and quick game because the disguised pressure collapses the pocket before route combos develop. It gets exposed by inside runs and screens away from the rush since the underneath defenders are committed to zone drops rather than run fits, so be ready to user the middle defender down into run support if you see run action.
Use this on early and medium down and distance situations where you expect a drop back pass, since the fire zone pressure and three deep shell get exposed badly if the offense hits a run between the tackles. Identify the offense's protection pre-snap: if they are sliding protection away from your overload side, the fire zone pressure will win almost every time untouched. Bait the quarterback by showing Cover 2 or Cover 4 pre-snap with your safeties, then rotate into the fire zone shell at the snap to disguise the blitz. Hot route your outside cornerbacks into a hard press if you expect quick game or hitches, since their zone drop already starts outside and can jump those throws. Pair this call with Cover 4 Palms or Cover 3 Buzz Match from the same set so your pre-snap safety look stays consistent across multiple calls, keeping the quarterback guessing between zone blitz and standard zone coverage.
