Cover 1 Robber Press is a Dime 4-1-6 pressure coverage that puts press man on the outside with a single deep safety and a robber sitting in the shallow middle to jump crossers and dig routes. The four white square icons at the bottom show a four man rush getting immediate vertical pressure, while the linebacker level shows only one true underneath defender left to rob the middle after the deep safety and press corners lock up their assignments. This is a man beater killer designed to bait quarterbacks into throwing over the middle, so the primary read progression for the defense is to key the quarterback's eyes and let the robber undercut any in-cut or crossing route before it develops.
Pre-snap, identify the single deep safety alignment and press corners at the line, which confirms Cover 1 man principles with no help over the top on outside routes. Look for the robber defender's shallow depth at the second level, since his job is to key the quarterback and rob any in-breaking route before it crosses the field. This call is vulnerable to four verticals or deep double moves against press corners since there is no true deep zone help beyond the single high safety, so watch for offenses stacking two receivers on one side to pick or rub the press defender. Post-snap, watch for the quarterback staring down a shallow crosser or drag route, which is exactly the throw the robber is designed to jump, and be ready to break on the ball the moment the QB's eyes commit. This coverage struggles against quick game and hitches to the boundary since the press corners are locked in man with no zone eyes to help on well timed sideline throws, so respect the sideline route if the robber cheats too far inside.
Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to attack the middle of the field with drags or crossers, since the robber is sitting there to bait bad reads.
Check pre-snap for stack or bunch alignments that can rub press corners at the line, and be ready to adjust your DB depth or slide the robber's landmark with a hot route if you see a two receiver stack to one side.
Use this play after showing Cover 1 Contain or Cover 1 Contain Spy on earlier downs so the quarterback sees a similar shell but cannot anticipate the extra rob technique underneath.
Spy or manually control the robber defender yourself in user coverage to jump any deep in, dig, or slant route since the CPU AI can be late diagnosing crossers from press man alignment.
Pair this call with Cover 2 Man or Cover 4 Palms in your play-calling sequence to keep quarterbacks guessing between single high man pressure and deeper zone shells without changing your dime personnel.
