Breakdown

DB Blitz out of the Dime formation is a defensive pressure call built around an all out rush with minimal coverage. The diagram shows six defenders crashing downhill off the snap: the two outside DBs (X icons on the edges) rush off the corners, two inside defenders (square icons) shoot straight through interior gaps, and the two remaining X defenders at the second level also fire downhill, leaving only a shallow underneath shell. This is a blitz play, not a coverage or zone beater, designed to overload both edges and the A/B gaps simultaneously to force a quick throw or sack before route concepts can develop.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check if the offense has extra blockers or tight ends staying in to block, since that neutralizes the edge rush advantage this play is built on. Watch quarterback depth of drop, a quick three step drop means the ball is out before your rush arrives and you should have baited a throw into a shallow window. Identify if the offense audibles to a screen or draw, since the aggressive downhill rush from both interior defenders is exposed against those calls. Post snap, key the running back, if he stays in to chip or block the edge rusher you lose contain speed, user that rusher manually to loop back inside. This blitz beats slow developing man beater concepts and deep drop back passing but gets shredded by hot route quick game and RPO reads that attack the vacated middle of the field.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and long or in two minute situations where the offense is likely to take a shotgun five step drop, since the outside DB rushers can win with speed before the tackle sets. Check the offensive formation pre snap and confirm they are not in a max protect or heavy run look, because this blitz overcommits bodies and is vulnerable to inside runs and quick screens. Use pre-snap motion or a defensive shift to disguise which DBs are actually rushing versus dropping into a short zone. Pair this with Cover 2 Roll or Cover 4 Palms earlier in a series so the offense sees a similar Dime personnel shell before you dial up the all out pressure. Avoid using this on early downs against run heavy personnel, save it for known passing situations to maximize the free rusher win rate.
