Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the offensive line count and check for six or seven man protection, since that confirms this blitz has a numbers advantage. Watch running back alignment, if the back releases into a route instead of blocking, an unblocked rusher will get home immediately. This beats teams that rely on deep drop back passing and slow mesh point run plays that need extra time to develop. Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone drops behind the blitz can be shut down quickly by hot route sight adjustments and quick slants, so use this on early downs with predictable run tendencies. Post-snap, key the tackles and tight ends, if they immediately climb to the second level for screen blocks, bail out of the blitz assignment and squeeze the throwing lane instead.

Usage Tips

Call this on obvious passing downs like 3rd and long when the offense is likely to max protect or use a seven man protection, since the blitz overloads the edges before extra blockers can help.

Check pre-snap for tight formations or bunch sets that hint at play-action, since DB Blitz punishes slow developing rollouts and boots by collapsing the pocket from both sides.

Use the user controlled defender on one of the two outside DBs coming off the edge to contain scrambling quarterbacks while the rest of the blitz gets home.

Mix this in after showing Cover 1 Contain or Cover 2 Man from the same Dime personnel so the offense cannot key blitz off formation alone.

Avoid calling this against empty backfield spread sets where hot routes and quick game can exploit the vacated underneath zones.
