HB Stretch out of Strong I Wing personnel is an outside zone run play that sends the entire offensive line flowing laterally toward the play side while the HB takes the toss and reads blocks from the edge inward. The diagram shows the line and FB releasing on a lateral track to the strong side with the HB path bending outside before he can cut upfield off any wrong arm or reach block. This is a zone run designed to stretch defensive flow, not a man beater or play-action concept, and the primary read progression starts at the edge defender, moves to the alley defender, and finishes at the first threatening linebacker before the HB decides to bounce, bang, or cut back.
Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage before the snap since a hard outside shade kills the stretch lane immediately. Key the strong safety depth and alignment, if he is stacked in the box the cutback lane will be tighter and the HB should plan to bang it inside. Identify user controlled defenders flowing hard to the sideline, this play beats aggressive edge crashers who lose contain. Look for run blitz packages that send extra linebackers off the edge, HB Stretch struggles against unblocked penetration from a nano blitz. Post snap, track the Mike linebacker's pursuit angle, if he overruns the play side the cutback lane behind the FB opens up for a home run.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since outside zone loses value against extra run support.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the strong safety to confirm whether the defense is rotating down to outnumber the edge.
Hot route the FB into a lead block adjustment if the defense shows an overload blitz to the play side edge.
Pair HB Stretch with HB Counter Wk and Mtn Power O to keep linebackers honest on downhill flow before hitting them with the zone stretch.
Best called on early downs, first and ten or second and short, when defenses have not committed to heavy run blitz fronts.
