HB Toss out of Strong I Wing is an outside zone run play that gets the ball to the edge quickly, using the fullback and wing tight end to lead block and seal the perimeter while the offensive line reach blocks to wall off backside pursuit. This is a run play designed to attack the edge before the defense can flow, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, but it exploits over-pursuing linebackers and light box counts on the perimeter. The primary read progression starts with the FB lead block and wing seal at the point of attack, then bounces outside off the edge defender's block or cuts upfield if the alley is sealed.
Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers who crash hard inside since that opens a wide alley for the toss to bounce outside untouched. Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 or 3-4 over front with the strong safety stacked in the box, because that extra run defender can beat this play to the edge before the blocks develop. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or flowing hard laterally pre-snap, which signals they are keying the toss action and will blow it up. Check linebacker depth at the snap since linebackers playing downhill and tight to the line can diagnose and string the play out before the fullback gets a clean angle. Against nano blitz packages or edge pressure designed to beat blocks instantly, this play struggles because the extra hitch in the toss action gives penetrating defenders time to disrupt the backfield before the ball carrier turns the corner.
Check the box count pre-snap and only call this against light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the extra hitch to get the toss outside makes it vulnerable to fast run support from an eighth defender. Use motion or a play-action look from Mtn Power O or PA Power O beforehand to freeze linebackers and slow their flow to the edge. If the defense shows an overload front to the strong side, flip the play or check into HB Stretch or HB Counter Wk to attack the weak edge instead. This play hits best on early downs like first and second and ten where defenses are not yet in nickel or dime run support. Pair it in a sequence with FB Dive and Inside Zone Wk to establish inside run threats first, then hit the Toss for a home run when linebackers start crashing downhill.
