HB Dive out of Strong I Wing is a straight downhill run play designed to hit the A gap fast before the defense can flow. The diagram shows the fullback and offensive line blocking down at the point of attack while the HB takes a direct hand off and cuts north south immediately with no misdirection or lead step wasted. This is a pure run play with no play action or route combo attached, and the primary read for the ball carrier is the mesh point: press the A gap first, then bounce off the fullback's block based on which way the interior defenders flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth before the snap. If he is stacked tight behind the nose or 3 technique, he is reading dive first and will beat the fullback's block. Identify base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with two gapped defensive tackles, since this alignment clogs the A gap and forces the HB to bounce outside where he has no blocking help. Key on user controlled defenders flying downhill immediately after the snap. A good user player will abandon coverage responsibilities to plug the dive lane, so counters and play action off this look punish aggressive defense. Look for safeties creeping into the box pre-snap, which signals run support and makes the dive a low value call unless you can get the fullback a clean lane. Post snap, track whether the defensive tackles are shooting gaps versus reading the fullback's block, since gap shooting defensive line stunts kill this play before it starts.
Usage Tips
Use this play on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a quick, low risk gain since the design gets the ball out of the backfield fastest.
Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has stacked the box with 8 or more defenders, this play loses efficiency and you should audible to a play action shot instead.
Pair HB Dive with FB Dive in the same set to keep defenses guessing on which back gets the carry, since both hit similarly fast but create different flow keys for linebackers.
Combine HB Dive with PA Slide or PA FB Flat later in a series so that a linebacker who bit hard on the dive fake gets exposed on the play action boot.
Avoid calling this against defenses showing heavy blitz looks with linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap, since the dive has no time to develop against fast interior pressure.
