X Slant out of Strong I Wing is a quick-hitting pass play built around a fast, high-percentage throw to the X receiver. The X runs a hard slant across the middle for a quick strike read, while the wing back releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline and the TY/Y attacks vertically up the seam from the line. This is a man beater designed to exploit inside leverage and pick up yards after the catch, with the primary read being the X slant first, and the wheel route as the outlet if the slant window is jumped.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with a CB shaded inside or in press, which tips off vulnerability to the slant. Key the middle linebacker's depth and drop, since a shallow zone drop straight into the slant window will shut this concept down in Cover 2 or Cover 3. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone lurk spot, as this is the biggest threat to jumping the X slant route for a pick six. Post-snap, track the flow of the wing back's wheel route defender, since a blown coverage assignment or late reaction there opens up a big play down the sideline. This play struggles against tight zone coverage with underneath defenders sitting in passing lanes, so avoid calling it against Cover 2 Man or heavy zone blitz packages that clog the shallow middle.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like CBs in press or trail alignment on the X receiver, since the slant wins hardest against man leverage.
If you see a Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell with the corner sitting outside, hot route the X slant into a quick out or speed up the throw timing to beat the underneath zone defender.
Use this play on 2nd and short or 3rd and short situations where a quick, safe completion keeps the offense ahead of schedule.
Watch the flow of the wing back's wheel route as a home run outlet against man coverage if a linebacker tries to jump the slant.
