Power O Alert X Smoke

Breakdown

Power O Alert X Smoke is a strong side power run out of the Strong I Wing formation with 22 personnel, built to overload the point of attack with a puller. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole while the fullback and wing kick out the edge defender, creating a downhill lane for the HB behind the double team at the line of scrimmage. The X Smoke tag adds a quick bailout throw to the split out receiver on the outside, giving you an instant answer if the defense loads the box or shows blitz pre-snap. This is a run play at its core with a built in alert route, not a true RPO, so the primary read is the leverage of the edge defender and second level linebacker fits before deciding to hand it off or fire the smoke screen.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong side edge defender first, if he squeezes down hard to stop the power the alert throw to the X receiver will be wide open in space. Key the play side linebacker depth, a linebacker sitting shallow in the box signals run support and favors the smoke route over the handoff. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, these leave the flat vacated for the X Smoke since the corner is often playing off or bailing into a deep third. Man coverage with a cornerback pressed on the X receiver is the biggest threat to the alert route, so in that look commit fully to the power run scheme. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge can beat the pulling guard before he reaches the hole, so watch for late linebacker or safety blitz stems that threaten to disrupt the pull path.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive box count before the snap, if there are seven or more defenders stacked in the box hit the X Smoke alert instead of handing off into a losing gap. Use the fullback lead block as your visual key, if he seals the playside linebacker cleanly trust the pull and stick with the HB run. This play pairs well with HB Counter Wk and Mtn Power O in the same set since all three sell similar downhill action but attack different gaps, keeping linebackers frozen on flow. Best called on second and short or third and short when defenses commit extra bodies to stop the run, since the X Smoke punishes aggressive single high looks with a free access throw. Motion is not shown in this diagram, so rely on pre-snap defender alignment and safety depth to decide between the run and the alert throw rather than manufactured leverage.
